Questions

Straight answers.

Including the ones vendors usually avoid. If something you need is not here, ask us — and we will add it.

What it costs

What does it actually cost me today, out of pocket?

$695 to build it, then $99 a month starting the day it goes live. Nothing else. If you own more than one station it comes down — $79 each for two to four, $59 each for five or more.

Am I under contract? Is there a cancellation fee?

No, and no. It is month to month. Cancel whenever you like and it runs to the end of the month you have paid for. There is no exit fee and nothing to sign that locks you in.

Can I just sign up for a month to try it?

You can cancel after one month, yes — but you would still pay the build fee, because building it is the real work. What you can do for free is look at a live example and see exactly what you would be getting.

Do I have to pay for hosting somewhere else?

No. Hosting is in the $99. So is the SSL certificate, the content editor, and changes you ask us to make.

What about my domain name?

Keep it. It stays in your name, registered wherever it is now. We just point it at the new site. If you do not have one yet we will sort it.

What it is

Is this WordPress? Or Wix or Squarespace?

None of those. It is built specifically for radio stations — so it already knows what a show is, what a DJ is, and how to read what is playing on your stream. A WordPress site has to have all of that bolted on.

How is it actually built?

Your site is built into plain web pages ahead of time, then served from servers around the country. There is no software running on it that can crash, and nothing to log into that can be broken into.

What architecture do you use?

Static pages on a content delivery network, with a small editor on top. It is the same approach used for sites that need to stay up.

Is there an app?

No app to install, and that is deliberate — your listeners will not download one. The site works like an app on a phone: the player keeps playing while they look around. If you already have an app, we link to it.

Will it work

Will it work on a mobile phone?

Yes, and that is where most of your listeners will be. It is built for the phone first.

What about an old, slow phone on bad signal?

Yes. Your homepage is about 38 kilobytes — smaller than a single photo. There is almost nothing to download and almost nothing to run.

What if my stream provider is unusual?

Tell us who hosts your stream and we will check before you pay anything.

What if my site goes down?

There is no server of yours to go down. The pages sit on a network of servers around the world; if one has a problem another answers.

Running it

How do I make changes to my site?

Two ways, and you pick per change. There is an editor at yourstation.com/admin/ — it is a web page, not software to install. You change a show or add an event, press save, and the site updates in about a minute. Or email us and we do it, usually within two business days. Most stations do the day-to-day themselves and send us the fiddly things.

Do I need to know anything technical?

No. If you can use a form, you can use the editor. And if you would rather not, email us and it is done.

Will I break it?

You cannot, really. Every change is saved as a separate version, so anything can be undone. There is no way to delete the site by pressing the wrong button.

Security and the boring bits

Do I have to worry about an SSL certificate?

No. It is included, it is set up for you, and it renews itself forever. You will never get an email about it.

What is an SSL certificate?

It is what puts the padlock next to your address in a browser and turns http into https. Without it, visitors get a “not secure” warning and Google ranks you lower. With it, nobody thinks about it — which is the point.

Will I get hacked?

There is nothing to hack. There is no login on your website, no database, and no plugins. That is most of the reason we built it this way.

What about backups?

Every version of your site is kept, permanently. Going back is a couple of clicks.

If you leave

What if I want to leave?

Cancel any time. You keep your domain and your content, and we hand it over in a form you can use, at no charge.

Can I take the site with me?

Your content and your settings, yes. The underlying software stays ours — the same way you would not take the software with you if you left any hosted service.

Still wondering something?

Ask. We would rather answer an awkward question now than have you find out the answer later.
